Codes and conventions in films

1. What are codes and conventions?

Codes and conventions are methods to convey meanings in films and media messages and to prepare the audience for the film.

There are three different types of codes:

Technical Codes: camera techniques, framing, depth of field, mis-en-scene, editing, lightning, sound
Symbolic Codes: objects, setting, colour, clothing, body language
Written Codes: headlines, captions, speech bubbles, language style

2. What codes and conventions are used in film openings?

Mostly, Establishing Shots which show the setting or blank screens with titles on them are used in film openings. Sometimes, films start with a person narrating and films also often start with key events on which they are premised. All of these codes and conventions prepare the audience for the film.
