The 180° rule is used when two or more persons are talking. It prevents that the viewer gets confused and loses the orientation in a sequence of shots.
This image explains the 180° rule quite simple. It says that the persons can only be filmed from one side because the viewer would get confused if they suddenly saw them the wrong way round.
